On 14 August I suddenly became very ill. That evening Mr Kirby and his team performed emergency surgery on me.He removed a metre of my small bowel and rejoined the ends thereby avoiding the need of a bag.Mr Kirby visited every day during my hospital stay of six days and has phoned me at home to check on my progress. In my 77 years, and having been in hospital ten times, I have never met a surgeon with such an engaging bedside manner.Despite the mask, because of covid, every time I saw him he greeted me with a smile and explained in simple language the situation delivered in an unhurried manner. Mr Kirby and your team I thank you,but for your intervention and skill, I believe I would have died.

Well unexpected medical emergencies that might occur in one’s life are usually catastrophic and chaotic. If you are unfortunate enough to experience one of these episodes, then please for the best outcome let us hope it happens in Shrewsbury. I had emergency surgery in Shrewsbury hospital for both large and small bowel perforations and obstruction. Late on Saturday 21st Dec, after a very rapid and efficient appraisal in the Surgical Assessment Unit, Mr George Kirby and team miraculously appeared and operated. The prognosis was not good, not much better than 15% chance of survival let alone a successful conclusion. Six hours later in Intensive Care, I barely realised the seriousness of what had just happened nor the uncertainty of my ongoing situation. Thankfully not only had Mr Kirby’s outstanding skills in the theatre prevailed but his continued considerate personal attention to my treatment and care was paramount to my full recovery. As I regained strength and awareness, it was blatantly obvious that Mr Kirby was well respected not only by his team but in fact by ALL the health professionals that I met. It is due to him that I am here and able to write this THANK YOU.

Mr kirby saw me when I was admitted with bad abdo pains in March 2018. I had an emergency laproscopic cholecystectomy. I stayed in for a few days afterwards, adue to some complications and he personally checked on me a few times each day, just popping his head round and seeing how I was recovering. I was told by a consultant that if someone else had done the surgery, I would have needed open surgery, but Mr kirby is very very skilled at his job. I needed a few trips back to hospital unfortunately, but even when I was seeing another Dr, he always checked on me. The care he gave me will stay with me for the rest of my life. I really hope he reads these reviews.

Friendly and approachable. Took time to discuss options available and to help me make an informed decision. I never felt hurried or rushed at appointments. Excellent care from outpatient through to surgery and follow up. First time surgery could have been stressful but i felt confident and in safe hands.
